I'm wondering if you guys have an idea of the difference between what an international actuarial analyst vs. a regular actuarial analyst does in pension.

What are the different skills (interpersonal and technical) that an international actuarial analyst must have?

Have any of you worked or know someone who worked in an international actuarial analyst position before? If so, how was the experience?

Are you required to travel a lot once you've reached the consultant position? Do you do any travelling at the analyst position?

From what I've seen both Mercer and Towers have international actuarial consulting departments.

Unions, the reliable Democratic supporters, split from president on ObamaCare

Published May 25, 2013

Labor unions that have solidly backed President Obama are splitting with him over ObamaCare -- with one calling for the “repeal or complete reform” of the president’s signature health-care law.

Union leaders argue insurance costs for millions of workers will increase under the president’s health-care plan so they might have to drop their existing plan, despite Obama promising the opposite.

Their primary concern is the multi-employer or so-called Taft-Hartley plans that cover unionized workers in retail, construction, transportation and other industries that frequently use seasonal and temporary employment.

The union leaders say the roughly 20 million people covered by the plans will likely have higher premiums because the Affordable Care Act does not include tax subsidies for them.

However, workers seeking coverage in the upcoming, state-based marketplaces for insurance, known as exchanges, can qualify for subsidies.

Union leaders are now hearkening back to what Obama repeatedly said starting in 2009: "If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan."

Joe Hansen, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, wrote in a recent op-ed that that scenario “is not going to be true for millions of workers now" and the realization “makes an untruth out of what the president said.”

The plans are jointly administered by unions and smaller employers that pool resources to offer continuous coverage, even during periods of unemployment.

The union plans were already more costly to run than traditional single-employer health plans. And the Affordable Care Act only added to the cost by mandating essentially all plans cover dependents up to age 26, eliminate annual or lifetime coverage limits and extend coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.

"We're concerned that employers will be increasingly tempted to drop coverage through our plans and let our members fend for themselves on the health exchanges," said David Treanor, director of health care initiatives at the Operating Engineers union.

Other unions expressing their concerns include the hotel workers union UNITE HERE, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, according to The Hill newspaper.

They are joined in such concerns by at least two congressional Democrats, House Minority Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer, Maryland, and retiring Montana Sen. Max Baucus.

Baucus, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, recently said implementing the law could be a “train wreck.”

The bulk of the law is scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

Bob Laszewski, a health care industry consultant, said the real fear among unions is that many labor contracts are already very expensive and now employers are going to have an alternative to very expensive labor health benefits.

"If the workers can get benefits that are as good through ObamaCare in the exchanges, then why do you need the union?" Laszewski said. "In my mind, what the unions are fearing is that workers for the first time can get very good health benefits for a subsidized cost someplace other than the employer."

However, Laszewski said it was unlikely employers would drop the union plans immediately because they are subject to ongoing collective bargaining agreements.

Labor unions have been among the president's closest allies, spending millions of dollars to help him win re-election and help Democrats keep their majority in the Senate. The wrangling over health care comes as the 2014 elections near and union membership steadily declines amid attacks on public employee unions in state legislatures in Wisconsin and elsewhere across the country.

Union officials have been working with the administration for more than a year to try to get a regulatory fix that would allow low-income workers in their plans to receive subsidies. But after months of negotiations, labor leaders say they have been told it won't happen.

A Treasury Department spokeswoman declined to discuss the specifics of negotiations but said the law helps bring down costs and improve quality of care.

In addition, union officials also reportedly met privately this month with Senate Democratic leaders to discuss the issue.

Unions say their health care plans in many cases offer better coverage with broader doctors' networks and lower premiums than what would be available in the exchanges, particularly when it comes to part-time workers.

Unions backed the health care legislation because they expected it to curb inflation in health coverage, reduce the number of uninsured Americans and level the playing field for companies that were already providing quality benefits. While unions knew there were lingering issues after the law passed, they believed those could be fixed through rulemaking.

"In the rush to achieve its passage, many of the act's provisions were not fully conceived, resulting in unintended consequences that are inconsistent with the promise that those who were satisfied with their employer-sponsored coverage could keep it," Kinsey Robinson, president of the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers, said last month. “I am therefore calling for repeal or complete reform of the Affordable Care Act.”

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

I was working through problem...

I was working through problem 18 on Lesson 26 in the ASM manual. The problem gives the risk-neutral process for short term interest rates. The goal is to find P_t. The solution assumes alpha = r, and then uses the formula for alpha to solve for P_t. I tried a second approach: I used the Black-Scholes equation analog for bond prices to back out P_t. I assumed phi (sharpe ratio) was zero, since it is a risk neutral process. My answer is way off. What am I doing wrong?

“We’ll never survive!” ...

“We’ll never survive!”
“Nonsense. You’re only saying that because no one ever has.”

“Who says life is fair, where is that written?”

Welcome to the Exam Committee Game, Princess Bride Edition. I hope you all enjoy it. Here is a summary of the rules. In case of ambiguity, I reserve the right to clarify and my decisions will be final.

•	I will randomly select the members of the Exam Committee (EC).
•	The members of the Exam Committee will know who else is on the Exam Committee.
•	The Exam Committee will each be given access to individual Exam Committee IDs.
•	The game begins with the death scene of the first "guest" victim executed by the Exam Committee.
•	With the exception of the Exam Committee ID of each Exam Committee member and the initial death scene, no participant may participate in this thread after the official start of the game, as indicated by the death scene of the guest victim under more than one Actuarial Outpost (RF) ID.
•	Note that in the past this game has generated game-related discussion of possible alts of the players. Realize that by playing this game you are subject to speculation as to whether you are an alt.

Game Procedure

•	After each EC execution, the students discuss who might be on the Committee, and publicly vote for whom to lynch. Once a majority of the living students (which includes the Committee) votes for a particular student, he or she is lynched.
•	Votes may be cast beginning after each EC execution. Before voting, a player must make at least 2 posts of 25 substantive words in this forum. These posts may be made any time after the last round’s final vote, and your first vote for the round can be part of your second post. This requirement does not hold for those giving their proxy.
•	Voting is as follows: use BOLD to highlight votes and vote changes. Don't use bold for anything else. This is so I can try to follow the vote counts. If you change your vote, Unvoting your previous vote is strongly recommended to remain in the moderator's good graces. Given the relatively low number of players, I do not for the moment intend to enforce deadlines. If the game seems to be dragging on, I may at my discretion decide to do so.
•	After each lynching, EC may perform another execution. They will PM me their choice, I will inform the victim and give them sufficient time to compose their death scene, in which they will revevla any special role they have.
•	There are no ghosts or anything like that.

Special Roles:

There are three members of the EC, I will tell you that much. I will also tell you their special abilities:

Prince Humperdinck: The world's greatest tracker. Once per night, he may PM me the name of one IS, and I will tell him whether they are vanilla or if they have a special role.

Count Rugen: His fingers go to eleven, and so he may, if he wishes, vote for lynchings under his EC ID as well as his regular ID.

Vizzini: His genius knows no bounds. During the night, he may select one player. That player is stunned by his genius into complete silence. The chosen player must not for the remainder of the day communicate with any other player either through the game thread or by PM. The only thing they will be allowed to post is votes and unvotes.

In addition, there are five IS with special roles, although I did not give them special IDs or anything.

Westley and Miracle Max: If Westley is lynched, executed, or killed by Inigo and Miracle Max is still alive, he will be revived back to full health and suffer no long-term damage.

Inigo Montoya: Has an overdeveloped sense of revenge. At any point during the game, Inigo may PM me the name of another living player. (That player may not have any current votes on him or her) When that player is killed, if the player was IS, Inigo will get an immediate free revenge kill against any player he chooses. Once he selects a player, he may not change his selection and is stuck with it until that player dies. But the ability is reusable, and once the player he has chosen dies, he may at any point give me another name.

Fezzik: Fezzik is a Brute Squad. Once either one of two events happen, Fezzik may use his ability to prevent the EC from executing anyone during one night phase. The two events are, the death of at least one EC member, or the completion of the first round of the Treasure Hunt challenge.

Buttercup: She has a special role for the purpose of Humperdinck's tracking, but has no actual ability.

The Treasure Hunt

Going concurrently with the game thread will be some fun games, pitting the Exam Committee against the Innocent Students. There will be stakes. I will post the details in the thread devoted for those games once we begin.
