When it bombed I tried stopping the debugger and just rerunning the macro but that didn't work either. It's like the database is permanently locked from that point on.

Notice 2011-6 announces that Form 5500 is exempt from the PTIN requirement. Figures--get everyone in a panic to get the PTIN before the end of the year, and then decide it's not necessary.
